Born in 1940 in a small town in southern India, Bal "Balkishan" Lahoti was one of seven siblings. A self-described logical person with good common sense, he pursued an engineering degree against his family's expectations — a decision that would eventually bring him to America on a scholarship.
After working for companies like Ford and McDonnell Douglas, his entrepreneurial spirit led him to open a successful Indian grocery store in California in the early 1970s. But it was his discovery of yoga and pranayama breathing techniques that truly transformed his life.
