Bhastrika

भस्त्रिका

The 'bellows breath' — a vigorous pranayama technique involving rapid, forceful inhalations and exhalations to increase energy and lung capacity.

Bhastrika, meaning "bellows" in Sanskrit, is a powerful pranayama technique that mimics the action of a blacksmith's bellows. Unlike Kapal Bhati where only the exhalation is forceful, Bhastrika involves both forceful inhalation and exhalation in rapid succession.

Bal Lahoti teaches Bhastrika as an energizing practice that significantly increases lung capacity and oxygen intake. He explains that this technique generates internal heat, which helps cleanse the respiratory system and stimulate the digestive fire (agni). The practice is particularly beneficial for those who feel sluggish or low on energy. However, Bal advises beginners to start slowly and gradually increase the pace and duration.
