Ujjayi

उज्जायी

The 'ocean breath' or 'victorious breath' — a pranayama technique producing a soft hissing sound that warms the body and improves thyroid function.

Ujjayi Pranayama, meaning "victorious breath" in Sanskrit, is characterized by a gentle constriction of the throat during breathing, producing a soft, ocean-like sound. This technique is sometimes called "ocean breath" or "hissing breath" because of the distinctive sound it creates.

Bal Lahoti teaches Ujjayi as a warming breath that is particularly beneficial for thyroid health. The gentle pressure on the throat during this practice stimulates the thyroid gland, which plays a crucial role in metabolism and energy regulation. Bal also notes that Ujjayi helps build internal heat, making it an excellent practice during cooler weather or when the body feels cold. The rhythmic sound of the breath also serves as a natural meditation anchor, helping practitioners maintain focus.
